Well, I've already fucked up a bunch of New Year's superstitions by dropping and breaking a plate of waffles, and terrified T in the process.  So, to calm him down while I cleaned up, I put on music that seemed to get a positive response yesterday, and confirmed that he still likes it.  And . . . the baby likes Prince.  He's on my lap, cooing and bubbling and dancing as best he can.  How bad is that?

Here's to the night being generally uncrappy for all!

Awwww, too cute and hilarious in one.

What are the superstitions? Hope the rest of your night goes well.

Breaking stuff is unlucky, for one! I guess that goes for most dates, though.

How do you break waffles? :-P

With a pizza cutter, or a sharp plate edge. I've been cutting up my food prior to eating it, as I tend to have only one hand to spare.

Cute! Elliot's all about Michael Jackson.

That might be even creepier than Prince, but at least he was less explicit. What are you using for baby music in general? I've found some things, but am still trying to find more acceptable music.

I never really got into playing baby-specific music, it tends to annoy me. With both kids I just put together a playlist of music I liked that wasn't too fast-paced or adult in nature; Evan was partial to trance, Elliot likes Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, both enjoy Peter Paul and Mary.

Have you checked out the Rock-A-Bye-Baby! series yet? We have Nirvana and Tool, they're amusing but nothing I'd want to play a lot.

I'm mostly looking for inoffensive music, rather than meant-for-babies. For example, Ben Folds swears more than you'd guess, but some metal groups don't at all.

Folk music is mostly good (we like the Seekers, and I like either Guthrie), and we have the occasional bit of Strawberry Switchblade ( and Velvet Underground. We're listening to the Levellers right now.

For proper kids' music. I have Barenaked Ladies and Raffi, and don't mind Trout Fishing In America. Shonen Knife isn't kids' music, but toddlers love it. The Rockabye stuff reminds me of when my SIL noticed that a restaurant we were in was playing a Muzak version of Let's Get It On.

I swear I will choke on something if I ever manage to hear NIN "Closer" on Muzak.
